PITTSBURGH, PA, October 22, 2013 – MAYA Design, one of America’s top pervasive computing design firms, is excited to announce the launch of a Kickstarter campaign for MakerSwarm, an app authoring tool for the “Internet of Everything.” The campaign begins today with the goal of raising $100,000 to support the final phase of development and public launch of the product.
MakerSwarm works by giving you the power of X-ray vision, so that you can “see” into any of the smart devices around you, from cell phones to TVs, from connected thermostats to wearable sensors. It’s a visual tool that lets you grab hold of any capability within a device—like the flashlight in your phone or the timer in your watch—and drag and drop it into a new app in minutes, without writing a single line of code. MakerSwarm unlocks the power of connected devices so that everyday people, weekend tinkerers, and burgeoning entrepreneurs can collaborate to build influential and fun new products and experiences in a simple and powerful visual environment and share them across a swarm of their friends’ devices in a massive peer-to-peer community called the MakerSwarm Marketplace.
The initial research for MakerSwarm began as a project for the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA). It was then re-developed so that anyone – teens, geeks, moms, dads, me, you – can link components of their Android devices to anything in the Internet of Things. MakerSwarm debuted in April 2013 at the DEMO Conference—a showcase of new products from entrepreneurs and established companies—where it won the DEMO God award.
The future is going to be crowded with trillions of computers, unleashing technological complexity unlike anything we’ve seen before. Tools like MakerSwarm are about making the world more human literate, instead of asking us to become more and more computer literate. It’s not about coding. It’s about casually connecting ten, a hundred, a thousand, a million, a trillion things to build a richer more connected life.
Reward levels for the Kickstarter (www.kickstarter.com) campaign begin at $5. The basic version of the MakerSwarm app is available at $25 and starter kits with full access to the MakerSwarm Marketplace are priced at $165. In addition, MAYA Design has created exclusive MakerSwarm modules that can connect across hardware devices so that the Internet of Everything is truly a reality. MakerSwarm modules, along with the app and marketplace, begin at the reward level of $475.
