A diagnosis of sleep apnea can be a daunting prospect. The devices that treat the disease have to be worn every night and can have a significant impact on lifestyle. If patients give up on treatment, that’s not just a problem for device-makers, it’s also a serious health risk for sleep apnea sufferers.

UX DesignIn close collaboration, MAYA and Philips Respironics designed SleepMapper, an application for the web, tablet, and smart phone that gives patients real-time feedback about the performance of their sleep apnea devices and provides guidance on how to reach their therapy goals.
MAYA’s intuitive and accessible design lets users monitor their progress by displaying relevant data about the treatment’s health effects.
Beginning with low fidelity prototypes, MAYA conducted multiple design iterations to find the right look and feel. This effort ultimately culminated in high fidelity designs, as shown below.
By providing patients with daily feedback and coaching, they’re more likely to understand their treatment and adhere to it over time. To ensure the broadest possible reach, MAYA designed both a web-based interface and a mobile app, giving users flexibility and choice in how they access their information.

MAYA helped Philips Respironics realize their vision of an engaging, self-management tool to enhance sleep apnea care. By providing patients with daily feedback and coaching, they’re more likely to understand their treatment and adhere to it over time. That’s a win-win.
